Sugar

Sugar (we call her "Soo-gy")

Little PMR Sugar has been an amazing little chihuahua!
> Since her rescue from the mills in March of 2004, she
> has been able to gain a little weight and fill out,
> her coat has improved, she overcame both worms and
> Giardia, learned how to play (and beg), developed a
> lot of curiosity and enough bravery to go and 'check
> things out' on her own, has begun to develop her own
> unique personality, and has started to learn how to be
> more like a normal little dog. She has really been
> able to accomplish a lot in just a short time! She has
> a ways to go yet, of course, but we are so very proud
> of her willingness to explore and try new things, and
> her openness to learn to trust humans (and desire
> their touch)!
>
> Over the past week I have been taking little PMR Sugar
> to garage sales so she could get used to meeting lots
> of new people, and I have worked a little with her on
> a leash, so she would be a little more "ready" for
> today. Today, 7/31/04, is one of the biggest and most
> important days in her whole life. You see, today my
> sweet little foster girl, Sugar went to her forever
> home!
>
> Yesterday was a busy day for Sugar---foster dad gave
> her a bath, the groomer trimmed her nails (for free as
> her 'going away' gift), and Sugar said her goodbyes to
> her friends, the vet, and the vet techs. Then, she
> visited people at a couple of more garage sales,
> walked a little on the leash in the yard, said goodbye
> to foster gramma, played with her foster sister Lizzy
> and our two little male chihuahuas, had a favorite
> little Greeny treat, ate a nice supper, helped me pack
> up her "hope chest" items to take with her, and then
> went to sleep for the night. Early this morning we got
> up (we had to wake up the little sleepy head!), and
> got ready for Sugar's big day. Sugar had her breakfast
> and did her business outside, and then we took a 3
> 1/2+ hour ride to southern Michigan to meet Sugar's
> forever mom and dad who had driven to Michigan from
> Iowa last night. [We met them at approximately 9:20
> this morning.]
>
> During our entire ride to southern Michigan, Sugar
> either layed on my lap, looking up at me with those
> big eyes, sighing and snuggling in...not sure of what
> was going on, but so happy just to be getting lots of
> TLC---- or she was getting held like you hold a little
> baby when you burp them (with her little head snuggled
> into my neck)....she was just getting every bit of
> loving that she could, and was enjoying every second
> of it! About 1/2 hour away from our destination, we
> stopped at a rest stop so we could all stretch our
> legs, and Sugar could relieve herself. Once the entire
> "leash accessible" area was fully explored and
> sniffed, she did her business and we were again under
> way. [She's not the greatest on a leash yet, but it is
> a start!]
>
> We met Stacie and Randy in the parking lot of their
> hotel, in the back where we were pretty much all
> alone, and where there was a strip of grass. I had
> Sugar on the leash and we were checking out the smells
> in the grassy area. My husband went inside to let the
> Harris' know that we had arrived. Stacie was the first
> to walk up.....she called Sugar's name, and little
> Sugar trotted right over, little tail wagging away, to
> meet her new forever mama! In a couple of minutes, her
> new daddy called her, and she trotted right over, tail
> wagging, to meet him too! She was such a good
> girl....and such a brave little girl!
>
> Sugar didn't understand what was going on, and was
> just a little bit worried when I handed her over into
> Stacie's arms, but she did so very well..... I kissed
> my sweet little Sugar Baby good-bye and told her that
> foster mama would always love her, then turned and
> walked away and got in our car and we left, leaving
> our little girl with her new forever family. By the
> time I reached a mile down the road, the realization
> hit me--I would probably never again be able to hold
> her or kiss her, and I was so very sad. But when I
> thought about what this meant for Sugar (and not what
> it meant for foster dad and I), and I recalled how
> gentle and loving the Harris' were with little Sugar,
> and how well she instantly seemed to like them and
> respond to them, I just knew that they were the
> perfect forever family for her! Sugar's going to be
> very spoiled and very, very happy for the rest of her
> life. That eased some of the heartache for us.
>
> The Harris' would have approximately a 6 hour drive
> home, and were going to also make an additional stop
> or two along the way. I did call Stacie on her cell
> phone in the late afternoon to see how Sugar was doing
> on her big day with new mom and dad. What Stacie told
> me made me feel even happier for little Sugar. [But
> then, I'll let Stacie tell you about the rest of
> Sugar's trip "home".] Yes, she's going to have such a
> truly wonderful life! I am so very happy for her!
>
> Attached are some pictures. The first one is of Sugar
> when she was first rescued from one of the mills. The
> rest of the pictures are of PMR Sugar today,
> 7/31/04--the day she began her life with her very own
> forever mom and dad! We are so very proud of this
> sweet little mill survivor, and so very grateful that
> we were able to be a part of her life! Thank you, PMR!
