RACHEL

Dear Friends,

I noticed a glimpse of red in my garden yesterday when I got home from
work. As I watered the potted plants that were parched from the heat,
I wandered into the strawberry patch and engaged in my favorite
summertime activity, grazing in the strawberry patch! Now we are
talking summer! It has rapidly gone from cool and rainy to hot and
humid, and the rivers and ponds are full of Vermonters cooling off.

Grace is off riding the V-Rod to see her mom in Kentucky, so I am
living the single life for a couple weeks. One advantage to this is
that I have been able to bond with our little Papillon, Rachel. You
might recall that Rachel was a rescue dog that I found at Puppy-mill
Rescue on the net. She had a rough life to begin with but is being
pampered now. She’s become so attached to Grace that you seldom see
the two of them more than about 6 inches apart. Rachel has gotten
more sociable every day but always seemed to have this fear of me.
She jumps off the couch and barks at me if I stand up or even if I just
close my PowerBook, as if I were going to stand up. She would run the
opposite direction from me every time. It would break my heart to see
her jump in Rob or Hapy's lap every time they came to visit. I kept
telling her that I rescued her but she just gave me the cold shoulder,
that is, until Grace was gone. Now she is my bud and sits on my lap as
I drive to work, sleeps on my head at night, and now I have a pair of
shadows. I suppose she'll go back to being her aloof self when Grace
rolls back into town, but for now I have a new friend.
Looks like a glorious summer weekend coming up, I hope you enjoy yours!
